Professor Kerins is Professor of Therapeutics in UCC and Consultant Cardiologist in the Mercy University Hospital and Cork University Hospital, with a particular interest in Cardiac Imaging. Professor Kerins graduated from the School of Medicine UCC in 1984. He completed his internal medicine training in Cork before proceeding to Vanderbilt University Medical Centre in Nashville Tennessee for a Fellowship in clinical pharmacology in 1987 (Merck Sharp and Dohme fellowship and the Ainsworth Scholarship) and cardiology in 1989. He is a diplomate of the American Boards of Internal medicine, cardiovascular disease and echocardiography. In 1993 he joined the faculty of Vanderbilt University and became Chief of the cardiology section of the Nashville Veterans Administration Medical Centre in 1999. In 2006 he was appointed Associate Professor of Therapeutics in UCC and from 2007-2010 was Dean of the School of Medicine in UCC. He was appointed as Clinical Director at Mercy University in 2012, He has received numerous awards for excellence in teaching and clinical investigation.
